Mastering the Dunes on a Dirt Bike
The off-road season has begun and riders from all over will soon be heading over to the dunes! Riding a dirt bike in the sand dunes is very different from riding on a track or a trail, it is a whole new level of fun. Here are some tips to help you have the ultimate experience in the dunes!
-
Having the Proper Tires:
Paddle tires are very important to have on your dirt bike when in the dunes because the sand is loose and the tires can provide better traction, drive, and handling. Having the correct tires will help your stability in the sand as well.
-
Don't do it alone:
Knowing how big and desolate the dunes can be you can assume to never ride alone, it can become very easy to get separated and secluded from your group especially when you're having so much fun. And if you're planning on doing jumps make sure you have a spotter to let you know if it is safe or not to complete the jump.
-
Momentum:
Riding in the sand dunes can be challenging because the sand is loose so your goal when riding in them is to keep moving forward. In order to keep moving forward you'll want to remain balance and the easiest way to steer is to be standing, it will give complete power over the bike. Keep moving forward!
-
No Clutch:
There is no need to use the clutch in the sand, only because the rear wheel will be spinning and its best to just trust the torque and back of the throttle to reduce the spinning and get you better traction.
-
Body Positioning:
Normally, you'll want to have your weight further back than you would be on dirt or hard-pack. Keep your front end light otherwise you'll end up burying your front tire in the sand and fly right over your handle bars. You'll also want to grip your legs as much as possible because it'll help keep you stabile and take some pressure off of your arms.
Following these tips can significantly help your experience in the sand dunes be one to remember. Don't forget to always make sure to be aware of your surroundings. And never go straight up a dune without knowing what is on the back side. Most of all have fun!
