Does your SXS Need Paddles in the Dunes?
Berts Mega Mall | Powersports Hub
It is no secret that the dunes have become one of the most popular spots to go use your SXS because of the minimal impact to your SXS, as long as it stays right side up, the ever-changing landscape and vastness that the dunes provide to all off-road enthusiasts. Any duner will tell you that riding in the sand is a completely different experience than the track or trail and can even pose a challenge to any seasoned SXS rider who has never turned a tire in the sand. Some duners rely on paddle tires to provide a better riding experience while others say paddle tires are not really necessary to enjoy the dunes. Here are some advantages and disadvantages of using paddle tires in the dunes.
Why Paddle Tires Help:
If you are not running the right tires in the dunes then you are undercutting your SXS' potential. Having paddle tires on your SXS is one of the best options for riding the dunes because they give you much better float and provide much more traction than the knobby tires provide. If you decide to change your tires consider changing the front as well to “blade” tires. The “blade” tires add flotation, increased steering and optimal corner traction. Having the right paddle tire set up will give you far better control of your SXS and better overall performance. Most of the high-powered SXS' will enjoy the sand dunes more with paddle tires.
Power + Experience:
Although paddle tires are known to be the ideal tire for the dunes, some experienced duners actually prefer regular dirt tires. A good knob tire will work just fine in the dunes as long as you lower the tire pressure. Many duners also believe riding the dunes without paddles is more fun because you can drift at high speed. This, of course, goes hand in the hand with having enough power + experience to not need to reply on paddles.
Airing Down Tires:
If you don't have paddle tires or don't want to spend the money on a tire to play in the sand a couple of times a year, you can, of course, use your regular knob tires just know the key to riding the dunes is flotation. Lowering the air pressure, around 8-12 psi (W/ BEADLOCK WHEELS), gives your knob tires just enough pressure to keep your bead seated. The lower tire pressure flattens the tire which gives you grip and floatation in the sand. If you have the luxury of beadlock wheels then you can go even lower and they will work a lot much better.
RIDER TIP:
It is recommended to have a set of true Beadlock wheels on your SXS for airing down this low. If you do NOT have Beadlock wheels, do not air down this low as it could be very dangerous.
What Works for YOU:
Paddle tires are a popular option for riding the sand dunes but it is not the only option. You need to be riding the dunes the way it works for you and how you want to ride the dunes. If you feel like paddle tires are the best way to ride because it provides additional traction and overall performance then get those paddle tires installed and go out and ride. If you feel like paddle tires are not necessary just lower the tire pressure from your knob tires and ride on. There is no right or wrong option for the sand, it is just about enjoying the dunes!
