Off-road enthusiasts can all agree that there is nothing worse than getting a flat tire in the middle of your off-roading adventure. Getting a flat tire while off-roading is bound to happen when branches, rocks, and other hitches can easily tear through a sidewall. Getting a flat tire in the middle of nowhere can become a challenge when a tow truck service will not go off-pavement to help and cell phone service is minimal. If you enjoy venturing off-road, it is important to know what to do in case you get a flat tire in the middle of nowhere. Here are some tips on what to do if your dirt bike or quad gets a flat tire while off-roading.

Must-Have Tools:

If you ever get a flat tire in the middle of nowhere, it is important to not only know how to repair it yourself but also have the proper tools to fix it. Having a tool kit nearby in case you need to perform an emergency repair in order to keep moving. Makes sure the tool kit includes all the necessary tools needed to remove the front and back wheels. This emergency tool kit should help you to at least get your dirt bike or quad back to your location.

Here are some must-have tools:

  • Tire irons
  • Tire wrench or socket
  •  Portable air source

Assess the Situation:

Wherever your Powersports vehicle leaves you, make sure you find a safe location to fix your unit. Try not to ride your dirt bike or quad with a flat tire because it can damage the sidewall and make the situation a lot worse than what it was. It is recommended that you stop riding and find a flat and hard surface to work on your unit. Make sure the area you choose is away from the trail and other riders who may be riding by.

Use a Tire Plug:

The most convenient way to fix a flat tire (especially for an ATV) is to plug the tire. Since the tire does not have in an inner tube, you can plug the puncture straight on the tire. This method is the easiest because you do not need to remove the tire form your vehicle. Inspect the tire and find the puncture. If the puncture is small, it can often be plugged easier and more quickly than swapping it out for a spare. Once you find it, plug us the puncture and you are all set. Please know that this method of fixing the tire is only temporary. Once you get your unit home safely, you must properly repair the tire.

Insider Tip: In order to plug the tire, you must have a flat tire repair kit available.

Carry a Spare Tube:

Getting a flat tire when off-road has become so common that many riders make sure to have a spare tube with them at all times when riding. This way, if the flat tire is caused by a puncture that is not fixable, then all you have to do is change the tube. The first thing you must do it remove the tire from the bike and get the tube out. Inspect the tube and look for any pinch marks or punctures. If the tube was punctured, make sure to look inside the tire and remove the object that punctured it. Once the tire is clean, slide in the new tube.

Patch Up the Tube:

If the damage to your tire is minimal or you do not have a spare inner tube for your tire, you will be required to repair the tube. The good thing is that repairing an inner tube is fairly easy. In order to fix the tube, you must have a puncture repair kit handy. You must first remove the tire from the bike and find the puncture so you can patch it. Keep in mind that a patched inner tube is not a permanent solution to the problem. Patching up the tire will get you home where you can change the inner tube for a new one.

Insider Tip: If you keep riding with a patched tube, there is a big change the tire can blow-out or leak.

Conclusion:

Off-roading on a dirt bike or quad brings a sense of thrill and adventure, but it is a bummer when that has to end because of a flat tire. Off-roading flat tires are extremely common because of the different objects that can interfere and puncture your tires. It is important to be prepared with a spare tire and/or tube, as well as a good repair kit so that you are not left stranded/ Being able to fix the flat tire will get you ready to ride again in no time.
