Does your motorcycle feel weak or powerless when you’re on the throttle? This is a delayed throttle response and can be caused by a couple of different issues. Delayed acceleration can also include no response when twisting the throttle. If you are experiencing this, it is important to have the issue fixed before it causes more damage on your motorcycle or causes you to not make the right move while on the road resulting in an accident. We have listed out some of the most common issues related to delayed throttle response.

Wrong Sparkplugs:

All types of vehicles whether they’re cars or motorcycles come with a specific spark plug size. Having the wrong spark plugs in your motorcycle will definitely cause a delayed or slow acceleration. It can also cause other issues like reduced gas mileage and trouble starting the engine.

Fix: The fix to having wrong spark plugs in your motorcycle is to follow what your owner’s manual says. You can also choose to see a local automotive shop that can look up the right spark plug through their computer databases.

Worn Spark Plugs:

Spark plugs that are dirty or worn out should be replaced soon because they also cause a delayed throttle response. Oil residue can cause a weak or inconsistent spark. The weak spark that is released is not enough to accelerate.

Fix: The first thing that should come to mind when your motorcycle is not accelerating are your spark plugs. If you know you have the right size in, then just pull them out to make sure they’re clean. It is time to replace if they have any oil residue or look worn out!

Bad Gas:

Gas can go bad in as soon as, 30 days. If your motorcycle has been sitting with gas in it, it can cause your engine to run inconsistently and delay the throttle response. Gas that is mixed with ethanol is more likely to go bad because it attracts moisture over time and will dilute the gas causing the engine to run poorly.

Fix: The fix to having bad gas is simpler than it sounds, don’t let your bike sit there and let your gas get old. If you do happen to forget, you’ll have to remove your gas tank and clean the gas tank out!

Dirty Carburetor:

The results of having bad fuel do not just affect the engine but the carburetor as well. It causes harmful gum or varnish deposits that form inside your carburetor, then it restricts carburetor passages and jets. Even if you have new gas in your motorcycle a bad carburetor will result in uneven fuel supply also.

Fix: If you have determined the cause to your motorcycles delay is a dirty carburetor you’ll want to clean it as soon as possible. You will need to take apart your bike, keep all of the parts your remove organized and work on one carb at a time (if your bike has many). Don’t forget you’ll need a carb cleaner!

Clogged Air Filter:

Motorcycles do need sufficient amounts of air into the combustion chamber. When there is not enough airflow going into the combustion chamber it causes the air and fuel mixture to become overly rich and then causes that delayed acceleration. This issue is easy to determine, look for a dirty air filter, decreased gas mileage, engine misfires, and of course, engine delay.

Fix: Depending on the condition of your air filter, start off with trying to clean it. Remove the air filter and rinse off excess dirt with water, was off the dirtier sports with a proper soap solution and rinse then dry thoroughly. Know when to determine if it’s time to replace.

Figured It Out?

Now that you’ve read some of the most common issues that result in a delayed throttle response we hope you were able to pinpoint the root of the issue. There are other issues that could cause a delayed throttle response like, chain tension, fuel injection, throttle cables, and your suspension. Go through all of these parts of your bike with carefully and again remember it is important to fix this issue as soon as possible.
