Get Your Scrub On

There are so many techniques to make you a better motocross rider but for most of us the onewe wish we could master it has to be the super low, handlebar hitting, peg dragging scrub! Scrubbing is when a rider attempts to stay low while jumping over an obstacle. When scrubbing the rider is laying the bike over and absorbing the rebound suspension with their body to keep the trajectory low and lets you spend less time in the air. Now it may sound a little complicated so to help you master scrubbing here are some tips we have found helpful!

The Approach:

The approach that you’re going to take when coming into an obstacle will depend on whether you are racing or riding for fun. When racing it is more beneficial to scrub a jump so that you can reduce the time in the air and get over the obstacle as quickly as possible to get back on the ground. And it is always ok to come in at the obstacle a bit faster than normal and show more aggression on the brakes when you’re planning on scrubbing a roller or a wall jump.

Rider tip: Your approach line should be as straight as possible.

In Air Control:

When the bike is in the air focus on keeping the bike low and also bringing the bike down to the ground as fast as you can. Before you get the bike back on the ground make sure you’ve already sized up the landing and straightened the bike back to normal so that your landing is smooth as possible and you can get back on the throttle.

The Face of the Jump:

When coming up to the face of the jump your body will carve out to the right and the bike will carve out to the left. This allows the suspension, instead of unloading to deflect out, when the suspension deflects out early as you’re going up the face you stay lower you go faster.

Jumping style:

Your jumping technique has to be solid in order to receive the results of your desired scrub. Your bike and body will have opposite reactions of where they’ll be since the suspension deflects to the side and minimizes height off the jump face. Imagine putting the bike down to the inside of the body coming up the face. This movement may feel unnatural if you’ve been jumping straight your whole life but this movement must be done in order for the suspension to unload to the outside. And turn your bars down over the lip of the jump as you lean to the side.

Rider tip: The sudden change in jumping styles from straight to scrubbing can be challenging, start small and don’t hit the scrub too fast if you’ve never tried it.

Your landing:

When landing prepare for a flat landing. Remember that there is traction to be careful about. You always have to be on either the throttle or on the brakes. You can coast off the lip but not the landing and do not drag your brakes off the lip.

Scrubbing is one of the more advanced jumping techniques out there but watch any pro race and see how much time is saved by scrubbing. Going big is fun to watch and do but all that sweet hangtime will cost you in a race situation! As we stated above before learning to scrub make sure you are confident on straight jumping. Common beginner mistakes that can be easily avoided are going to fast then mistiming the obstacle causing you to maybe case the jump or over jump . But keeping all of these tips in mind will help you get started on scrubbing like a pro on your dirt bike!
