The Ultimate Off-Road Guide to Pismo Beach Dunes
Berts Mega Mall | Powersports Hub
The Oceano Dunes State Vehicular Recreation Area, also known as the Pismo Dunes or Pismo Beach, is the closest coastal dunes that allow off-highway vehicles to Southern California. It brings visitors from all over California to have the opportunity to enjoy some OHV and the closeness of the beach, which is very uncommon. Boasting some of the most beautiful, sculptured, and steepest sand dunes in the state, it is no wonder why many OHV enthusiast make a trip to this destination multiple times a year. The State Recreation Area consists of about 3,500 acres, 1000 of which are dedicated to a wildlife preserve, still leaving about 1,100 acres of sandy fun!
About Pismo Dunes:
How to Get to Oceano Dunes?
This recreation area is located in the city of Oceano, about three miles south of Pismo Beach off of Highway 1. One mile south of the Pier Avenue beach ramp is Post 2, a post on the beach which marks the beginning of the off-highway vehicle riding and camping area.
OHV's must be transported to this point before unloading. Any areas on the beach or in the dunes that are fenced or signed are closed to vehicular use because they either contain sensitive plant and animal life or are private property.
What Ohv’s Can You Bring?
Motorcycles, four-wheel drive, all-terrain vehicles, and dune buggies are all allowed with the proper and legal registrations. Whip and flags are required for all vehicles in the dunes. Except for two-, three-, and four-wheeled cycles, all vehicles shall be equipped with adequate roll bars or roof structures of sufficient strength to support the weight of the vehicle and shall have a secure seat and seat belt for the vehicle operator and each passenger. There are local businesses that offer ATV and utility vehicle rentals.
Where to Camp?
Camping is allowed right on the beach. It is highly recommended that you know the tides before you head out. The tides determine whether or not you can drive down to the beach successfully. Although you can camp in a tent, we think it is a better idea to camp in an RV or a trailer if it is possible because at the beach there is always some kind of wind and of course sand everywhere. You may find it to be uncomfortable when you are finding sand all over your sleeping area. They offer vault and chemical toilets, but you do need to bring your own source of water. All trash must be packed out and no water is allowed to be dumped on the sand.

What to Do in Pismo Dunes?
-
Oceano Dunes:
As we’ve mentioned before, the Oceano Dunes State Recreation Area is one of the few remaining coastal sand dunes open to OHV. You may also know this area as Pismo Beach but it was renamed. The Oceano Dunes are a favorite weekend destination for thousands of OHV enthusiasts. It is a giant playground for your ATV, UTV, dirt bike or dune buggy. You can visit these dunes throughout the whole year for the most part because the temperatures do not go very high since you are so close to the ocean. There is occasional high winds and fog, just be sure to check the forecast before heading out! Expect many visitors during any and all major holidays.
Arroyo Grande Creek Crossing:
The Arroyo Grande Creek Crossing is an area that you can drive through to get to the beach. There are possibilities of getting stuck so watch out for extremely high tide or a combination of high tide, high surf, and strong winds can make beach travel more challenging. The wet and hard packed sand surface is less available for vehicle travel during these periods. During these periods you may be forced to travel on dry loose sand, increasing the challenge of avoiding getting stuck in the sand or while crossing Arroyo Grande Creek. If you plan on taking your vehicle onto the beach we suggest you plan your arrival during low tide periods.
Finding the Famous Dune Jump
This jump used to be used at Huck Fest, which was one of the largest truck jumping competitions in the country. Drivers would jump their pre-runner style trucks off massive dune jumps and the crowds started to gather so soon it became a big enough event. Eventually, they stopped hosting this event because it became too expensive to run. But you can still look for the impressive dune jumps that the famous riders used to hit and try yourself (if you have the experience!) Remember to not try anything you are not comfortable with.
