Randsburg, California offers all types of terrain from mountains, sand wash beds, and good ole high-speed open trails. Sometimes considered a “living” ghost town, is a historic mining town located near Route 395. During the year you will find the small population of about 80 to be desolate, but during the off-roading season, this town is booming and full of riders passing by and staying in town. You may have some questions about what to do here and we’ll go over some important things to know before you make the trip!

How to Get There:


Randsburg is located right off of Route 395. Using Bert’s Mega Mall (in Covina, CA) as the departure location you can simply take I-210 East to I-15 North, take I-15 N for about 25 miles until I-15 N splits and Route 395 comes up. You will take Route 395 for about 55 miles and exit on Redrock Randsburg Rd.

Camping:


Camping is within riding distance from Randsburg in Spangler Hills open area. Taking Trona Rd. off of Route 395 will point you to this destination. Riders can also camp in nearby areas like California City, Dirt Diggers Campsite and Cuddy Back.  Be aware that there are open, unmarked mine shafts all over camping areas. Usually, there are large holes in the ground making it obvious that they are there, but sometimes it is not as obvious. Either way, it is important to be aware of your surroundings. There are no plumbing or disposal accommodations in these camping areas, be prepared to provide your own sources and pack out what you pack in.

Regulations:


In any OHV area near Randsburg, all cross country travel is prohibited. If camping in this area keeps in mind camping is limited to 14 days, after 14 days, campers must relocate at least 25 miles from the previous site. Pets must be under your control at all times. And there are citations for riding on unmarked trails. Do not tamper with any wildlife or vegetation. Follow rules to avoid closure of favorite riding spots and just use common sense.

Off-Road Vehicles Allowed:


Very much like other OHV areas all off and on-road vehicles must have an up to date registration. Green sticker vehicles are allowed year-round and red sticker are permitted from October 1st- May 31st.  Off-road vehicles are only allowed on existing routes. Side-by-sides, dirt bikes, and ATV are all allowed. Make sure to follow all rules to ensure you with a fun and successful off-roading trip!

What to do in Randsburg

Cuddeback Dry Lake


Cuddeback Dry Lake is located East off of Route 395 about 16 miles from Randsburg. Dry lakes are always fun to ride because of the wide-open space you have surrounding you. However, at this dry lake, you are only allowed to ride on already existing routes. Riders report great weather for the most part when not accounting for the summer heat. And also a popular spot to ride past during major holiday weekends.

Husky Monument


Husky Monument is a special place for those in the motorcyclist/motorsport enthusiast hobby. Also known as Husky Memorial it is a memorial to the fallen motorcyclist. Riders can stop by and honor other riders who met their unfortunate fate or just ride by and observe the unique and creative ways other riders honor their friends or family. Only about 12 miles from Cuddeback Dry Lake you can put this on your list to stop by.

Red Rock Canyon State Park


Red Rock Canyon State Park features scenic desert cliffs, buttes, and spectacular rock formations. The park is located where the southernmost tip of the Sierra Nevada converge with the El Paso Range. Each tributary canyon is unique, with dramatic shapes and vivid colors. The park is 25 miles northeast of Mojave on Highway 14 and is only about 27 miles from Randsburg. Definitely worth the ride over!

Whitehouse Saloon


After or before all the fun you want to make sure to stop by Whitehouse Saloon. Many visitors say this is a great place to stop by and have a burger. The restaurant is located right in the middle of Randsburg. There is parking on the left side of the building for off-road vehicles and they embrace the off-roading scene with open arms! They are a cash-only restaurant so be sure to have some on hand. Also one of the only restaurants in the city (besides the Randsburg General Store), the next restaurants will be found closer to California City or Ridgecrest.

Ridgecrest


Ridgecrest is the next larger city over from Randsburg, this city is about 22 miles or about a 26-minute drive from Randsburg and also has more restaurants nearby. If you’d like to off-road there, Wagon Wheen OHV Staging Area is there and The Football Field OHV Parking area is also there. This city is also home to the China Lake Naval Weapons Center and the China Lake Naval Air Weapons Station.

Randsburg Desert Museum


If you want to take a break from the action stop by the Randsburg Desert Museum to learn a little history about Randsburg. The Rand Desert Museum is a non-profit organization dedicated to preserving, protecting and sharing the historic cultural resources and architectural history of the Rand Mining District as well as adjacent historic and prehistoric sites in the Upper Mojave Desert Region of California.

Conclusion

Although Randsburg may seem like a ghost town there is plenty of off-roading land waiting to be ridden on! This is a great place for a weekend out with your friends, family, and all the toys. Keep all of the rules and regulations in mind to avoid your weekend being cut short. And also remember this towns mining history means there are many open and unmarked mine shafts.
