When you buy a motorcycle, the first thing that comes to mind is how to stay safe on the road. Having additional lighting will not only enhance your visibility on the road but also improve the look of your motorcycle. Adding LED lights on your motorcycle will make you more visible to other riders thus increasing your safety. However, before you begin to install new lighting on your bike, you must check the motorcycle light laws of the state you live in to make sure that what you are adding is legal. Here are some different ways you can add or change the lighting to your motorcycle.

Motorcycle LED Light Laws

If you are thinking of adding lighting to your motorcycle, you must check to see what is legal in the state you live in. If you add anything that is illegal you will be penalized with a ticket and must take the lights off. Here are the Light Laws for the states of California:

  • Any visible light projecting to the front of the vehicle shall be predominantly yellow to white
  • Any visible light projecting to the rear of the vehicle shall be predominantly red

Headlights

If you are thinking of replacing your motorcycles headlights to an LED or HID headlight, make sure that they are somewhere in the color spectrum between white and yellow. These lights will not only increase your visibility at night, but you will also be following the light laws in California. If your bike’s headlight has the ability to change colors, you can change it to any other color you would like, but only when the motorcycle is not in use.

Auxiliary Lights

Having more lighting when driving at night will give you more visibility and keep you safer. Adding additional axillary lights to the front of your motorcycle will help you see and be seen and make your motorcycle look a lot better in appearance. If you decide to add these driving lights to your unit make sure that they are white or yellow in color since they will be projecting light to the front of the bike. You can be penalized if you add these lights in any other color because it is only legal for Law Enforcement, Fire and Paramedics.

Motorcycle Underglow

One of the best lightings you can add to your motorcycle to make it look out of this world is an underglow. Adding Underglow lighting to your motorcycle is legal in California, but it does come with some regulations. You can use any colors for the underglow except for red because it cannot be displayed in the front of the bike. The underglow lights cannot be flashing lights because that can be a distraction and safety hazard for you and the other drivers.

Insider Tip: We recommend not to use colors like blue or red because they can easily be mistaken for a Law Enforcement vehicle.

Other Great Options

Here are other lighting options you can add to your motorcycle:

  • Motorcycle LED Helmet: Make your helmet look futuristic by adding LED accents. Adding lights to your helmet will also make you be more visible during bad weather and in dark areas on the road.
  • LED Kits: Make a visual impact on your motorcycle by adding accent lighting to the engines, fenders, under seats, body vents, and cowl openings. LED kits include everything you need to install these lights. You can choose from one solid color or color-changing effects.

Conclusion:

Adding extra lighting to your motorcycle will not only give you more visibility to keep you safe, but it will also make your motorcycle look amazing. Before you decide to make the change, make sure that you follow California laws and maintain the lights the correct color. Make your motorcycle unique by adding some bright LED colors to make your motorcycle stand out and shine.
