The best advice we can give any motorcyclist about riding in the rain is to avoid it at all cost. Riding a motorcycle in dry weather is already considered hazardous because of how difficult it is to be seen so riding in the rain makes it even more dangerous for drivers to see you. Your visibility, balance, and control are immediately put at risk which can cause an accident. Although we recommend that you avoid riding in the rain we understand that sometimes riding in the rain is the only option you have. Having weatherproof gear can make riding in wet weather more tolerable and safer. Having the proper gear will not only keep even the most persistent storm from soaking you, but it will also keep you warm while riding. Here are some gear products we believe are essential to riding safer in the rain.

Helmet:

When it comes to your helmet, having a full-face helmet is ideal when riding in the rain because it offers the most protection in case of a crash and also from the wind, rain and cold weather. If you own an open face helmet make sure you have a visor or goggles available to keep the rain off your face. Your visibility is the first thing to diminish when you ride in the rain so it is important that you have a clear visor because it will offer you the most visibility. Having anti-fog visor or goggles will also be ideal so that the shield won’t fog up and blur your vision.

Bonus Tip: If your full-face helmet has built-in vents remember to close the vents before it rains

Rainsuit:

Having a rain suit is ideal because they are made specifically for that purpose, riding a motorcycle in the rain. Having a one or two-piece rain suit will allow the water to glide right off of you and not soak in. The two-piece suit pants are high waist to keep the water from entering the coat and have shoe straps to hold the pants down to keep the water from blowing up your leg. The rain suit is perfect to keep you dry and comfortable while driving in the rain.

Rain/Weatherproof Jacket:

If a rain suit is not for you, having a weatherproof riding jacket will also keep you dry in the rain. You will need a rain jacket with a high collar that seals around your neck so that no water will drip inside and also seals tight around the wrists so that no water goes up your arms either. Having a weatherproof jacket is great because it is not something you need to change into when it starts raining like the rain suit. If it suddenly starts raining during your motorcycle adventure, your weatherproof jacket will have you covered at all times for wet riding.

Weatherproof Pants:

Many riders worry so much about having a weatherproof riding jacket that they completely overlook the riding pants. Weatherproof riding pants are an important piece of gear that is made from waterproof fabric to help you stay dry in the rain. These pants must seal around your waist so no water can drip inside and an also seal around the ankles to prevent the water from seeping in. Without these, you are literally sitting in the rain as its tough to move around on your bike while the roads are slippery and vision is limited.

Gloves:

It is extremely important to keep your hands warm and dry when it rains because this is your main connection to your motorcycle. Having waterproof gloves will keep your hands dry and offer more control of your bike. It is preferred that you wear full-gauntlet gloves because the longer length of the glove will allow them to extend over the sleeve of your jacket keeping the water from dripping down into your hands.

Boots:

Wearing regular shoes when riding is never a good idea especially in the rain. Road water and rain will splash and wet your feet almost immediately as you ride. It is important to keep them dry because they are responsible for shifting gears and the rear brake. Finding the right waterproof boot will allow you to safely ride your motorcycle and be more alert when shifting gears. Boots that extend up to your pants are ideal because they will keep water out and maintain your feet warm and dry.

We do not recommend you riding your motorcycle in the rain, but we understand that sometimes riding in the rain is the only option you have.
