Our skis bring so much fun and excitement to us that getting out on the water as fast as possible is our main goal every weekend. It is not just all about having and riding your ski but also making sure it has been properly maintained so that you’re not sitting there wondering why it is not starting. Nothing is more frustrating than your ski not starting up when you’re already at the lake/river. You are left hanging with the excitement and the overall feeling is unsatisfying. Many ski owners do not know what the issue may be right away, so we’ve put together a list of 5 of the most common reasons to why your ski is not starting up and also what you can do to fix the issue.

Proper Sealing:

Making sure your seals are in top-notch shape is vital. Jet Ski owners are sometimes not really familiar with seals. It is important to be familiar with them because worn out seals throughout an engine may cause an overflow of oil in unwanted areas, therefore, affecting the whole ski. You must have the proper seals for the jet ski engine to run at its full potential and last its whole lifespan. It is very easy to check and make sure your seals are in place and it can always be done in the skis winterization preparation.

Battery:

If something is not starting up you may immediately think it is your battery! Batteries may lose their charge when they are sitting for a long time or if there are left out in the cold for too long. There are things you can do to prevent your battery from dying. You remove the battery or store it in an area that will protect it from too hot or too cold conditions.

The Jet Pump:

Pumps are an important part of the jet ski because the pumps contain an impeller and that impeller accelerates water pressure before discharging it through the rear nozzle of the ski. This process leads to engine control and increases skis overall performance. You can tell if you have a worn down jet pump if you feel vibrations while it’s idling. There is no right away fix to this only prevention. Jet pumps wear out over time so we recommend you rebuild your jet pump every 4-5 years unless you need it sooner.

Fuel Lines:

Fuel lines bring fuel from one point to another in ski and are made of rubber. They’re a small piece of a big ski.  Fuel lines at times are overlooked when looking for what the issue in your ski night is. There is debris that can clog up in the carburetor that comes from a deteriorated fuel line. Fuel line deterioration affects the total throttle response.

Crankshaft:

Rusted crankshafts could be a reason as to why your ski is not starting. If your crankshaft is rusted you will not go anywhere because that is the part that is able to perform a conversion between reciprocating motion and rotational motion. Keeping it well-oiled will help prevent the rusting from happening.

If your jet ski is not starting just make sure to relax and take a deep breath. Each of these things happens to everyone at some point and can be fixed. The main point to take away from all of this is to just make sure you are doing the proper maintenance on your skis.  Being forgetful or inattentive to them could cost you more than what it should. Not only cost you money but also take time away from the weekend you’ve been waiting for. Just remember maintenance is key!
