Purchasing your very own SXS (side-by-side) can be one of the most self-rewarding feelings. They are very useful and can be used for all sorts of things whether it’s for recreational use or work use there is one for everyone. They’re very powerful vehicles, can seat up to 4 passengers in most cases, and typically are built with lots of storage space. Because there are so many options you may not know where to start or what you need to buy a SXS so we’ve narrowed down the top 5 things to know before purchasing your SXS.
Budget:
Before you purchase anything you always set a budget for yourself. SXS’s range cost from $13,000 to $30,000 depending on the brand and model that you are interested in. The cost goes up once you start adding customization and upgrades, but all for good reason. There are many options when it comes to financing making it possible for most to purchase. Monthly payments come in a variety of amounts and is dependent on characteristics of the buyer’s financial history. Aside from the initial purchase you also have to know if you can budget in cost for maintenance and insurance. Maintenance is required to keep you SXS running in great condition and falling short can ultimately cost you more money in the long run.
New or Pre-Owned?
Once you’ve figured out your budget you can actually start looking into the SXS market. Depending on where you budget lands you may start to think about whether you want to buy new or used. Pre-owned is always the next best option when you are looking for something that a little more affordable. You can choose to purchase from a private seller or purchase from a dealerships selection of pre-owned. You also want to weigh out the pros and cons. Pros of purchasing a pre-owned SXS is that you potentially save yourself an extra couple grand. Purchasing a pre-owned SXS from a private seller can sometimes be tedious because you don’t know what issues the previous owner might have encountered and whether or not these issues were fixed. Buying new is the safest route to go.
Best SXS for You:
There are many options to choose from when it comes to a new SXS. Top and well-known brands are Can-Am®, Polaris®, Yamaha, and Honda®. These brands have all released powerful and popular sport SXS. There are endless options because of different features each of their SXS can include. Here is a quick list of each brand's popular models with ONE of their popular SXS:
Can-Am®: 2020 Maverick X3
This SXS is available in different packages. Each package is made to cater to what you want to use it for. For example, mud, rock crawling, or performance and also how many seats you want (2 or 4). Can-Am® has about 15 packages to choose from!
Polaris®: 2020 RZR Pro XP
This SXS is new to the RZR family and comes in three different package options. Each option gains a little more equipment and technology. Polaris® also has RZR models like the XP Turbo, XP Turbo S, XP Turbo S Velocity, and Special Editions. This SXS also come in a variety of options to cater to whatever your off-roading heart desires.
Yamaha: Yamaha YXZ1000R
This pure sport SXS comes in a handful of options that come with a variety of suspension and shift differences. Yamaha sport SXS are only available in 2-seaters now, but we hope to see that change in the future!
Honda®: Talon 1000X
Honda® has more recently released their sport SXS, the Honda® Talon 1000. At first, it was only available as a 2-seater but it is now available in a 4-seater.
Keep in mind these are not the only options a brand may have there is much, much more! Each brand has its own charm and your best bet to finding the perfect SXS is to sit in one. You will know which one is right for you.
Storage:
Another thing to consider is where you will be storing it. SXS’s are not small and will require their own space. You will need a garage, storage space, or extra driveway space to keep it. If you have to store it outside we highly recommend keeping it covered as much as possible to avoid any type of weather damage. If you have a toy hauler that also works great just remember to measure the width of your trailer to avoid fitment issues. Some side by sides does come wider than others.
