Motorcyclists have to communicate with other people on the road much more often than people who drive cars. This is why knowing motorcycle hand signals is essential for any rider. Being aware of the different hand signals lets you communicate with other motorists and can keep you safe from potential hazards on the road. These are the basic signals every motorcycle rider should know before hitting the road.

Left Turn:

This signal is very important to know because if you do not have blinkers, you can signal to the drivers/riders behind you that you are intending to make a left turn. To signal a left turn, extend your left arm straight out at a 90-degree angle to your body with your palm facing down. By doing this, you will become more noticeable on the road and avoid a hazardous situation.

Right Turn:

This signal is also very important if you do not have blinkers. Since motorcyclists control their speed with the throttle in their right hand, this signal is done with the left hand. If motorcyclists try to signal with their right hand, they can slow down and cause a potential hazard on the road. To signal that you will be making a right turn, extend your left arm and bent it at the elbow so your hand in pointing upwards.

Stop:

If you want to let other drivers know that you are planning to stop, extend your left and straight down with your palm facing the back.

Hazard in the Roadway:

If you know there are other motorcyclists riding behind you, it is helpful if you point out any hazards on the roadway as you pass them. Any hazardous situation can be anything from roadkill, potholes, pools of oil, or gravel in a turn. This signal will depend on whether the hazard in on the right or left side of the road.

  • If it is on the left, signal by pointing at the object with your left hand at a 45-degree angle.
  • If it is on the right, signal by pointing on the object with your right foot.

Police Ahead:

This is one of the most important signals for any motorcycle rider. If you are riding and happen to pass a speed trap, you can warn other drivers behind you taking your left hand and tapping the top of your helmet a couple of times. That way the rider behind you can slow down and avoid getting a speeding ticket. Riders helping other riders!

Learning these important signals when riding will allow you to communicate with other drivers on the road and hopefully avoid any dangerous situations that can occur. By doing this, you will feel more safe and confident riding on the road.
