Keeping Your Motorcycle Yours…
Bert's Mega Mall | Power Sports Hub
Motorcycle enthusiasts love riding their bikes any chance they get whether its heading out for a long trip or just going down the block but sadly theft is a real threat. Thousands of motorcycles get stolen each year because a thief doesn’t really need to “break-into” a motorcycle like he would a car, thus making the motorcycle more vulnerable and prone to get stolen. What tends to happen is a truck is used and the thief or thieves will lift the motorcycle up and be on their way. Motorcycle theft is a common problem that you should always be kept in mind when you are out and about. Luckily there are some anti-theft devices that serve as theft prevention for your motorcycle. With thousands of motorcycles stolen each year it's worth spending some time and a bit of money learning how to protect yours.
Always Lock your Steering:
Make it a habit to lock your steering every time you get off of your bike. This should be really easy to do because it is part of your motorcycle already and only takes a few seconds to do! Although not much, this will add additional security to your bike since the potential thief can only walk in a circle.
Use a Cable Lock:
A cable lock is a great way to add protection to your motorcycle because you can attach it to something stationery (like a pillar or post) to prevent it from being carried off. Make sure the cable lock does not rest on the ground as that makes it easier for a thief to cut into the lock and steal your bike.
Use a Disk Lock or Disk Lock w/ Built in Alarm System:
Disk Locks are also a great anti-theft device because it prevents the wheel from moving. They are a great option for their size, weight, and effectiveness. Secure the disc lock in a way that will minimize the distance your motorcycle can roll (like up against the caliper or swingarm). It may not stop someone from “lifting” the motorcycle it is very tough to get off without damaging the bike.
For additional protection, there are some disk locks that also come with a built in alarm system. If there is any motion with your bike, the alarm will go off alerting you that someone is close to your bike and possible trying to steal it.
GPS System w/ Built-in Alarm System:
A GPS device will not necessarily help you to prevent your bike from being stolen, but it will help local law enforcement locate your bike once it’s been stolen. So if you add an alarm system, the GPS system can alert you to the movement of the bike. If your bike is parked somewhere out of your line of sight, the alarm will notify you if suddenly your bike starts to move and the GPS will let you know where it is going.
Use a Motorcycle Cover:
A thief cannot steal your motorcycle if they can’t “see” your motorcycle. Having a motorcycle cover is important because it prevents you from drawing any attention to your bike. Not knowing what is underneath makes it harder to consider the difficulty of stealing it. If a thief wants to know what is under the cover, he will have to approach the bike causing alarms to go off and alerting you of the possible robbery.
Motorcycles continue to gain popularity but you can never be too careful with them in regards to security. Adding additional layers of security to your bike will decrease the possibility of getting your motorcycle stolen. Whether you want to add one security method or all of them, keeping your bike safe and secure should be near the top of your priority list.
