You’re finally going to the Motocross track with your new bike and you’re excited. Now, it’s not all about being excited but also about knowing what you’re doing when you get there! There are a few skills we recommend having down before attempting to hit the track. Being familiar with these skills will help you have an overall great experience and help keep you out of dangers way. Remember too that the majority of complexes have multiple tracks such as Beginner, Vet, and Pro so if it's your first time the Beginner track could be the one to start on.

If you’re a beginner, no worries, we will guide you into what you need to know and expect before showing up to the track!

Clutch & Shifting:

Familiarizing yourself with shifting on your bike is crucial before even getting on the track. While on the track there is not much reason to use the clutch for downshifting. Downshifting will interrupt the momentum and flow of your moto, especially when coming into a turn. The brake is going to help you when coming into the turn, you’ll have to test and feel how much to brake. Its really about being in the right gear at the right time, easier said than done though!

Bonus tip:
If you have the time we recommend going to the track as a spectator or observing other riders before getting on the track right away. Observing other riders helps you figure out what is good and bad to do, as you may see someone commit a mistake that you now know to avoid!

Control & Balance:

If you know how to ride a dirt bike outside of the track balancing yourself and being able to ride in a straight line should hopefully be no problem. Because there are other riders on the track, it is important to make sure you are not all over the place. Being unstable may cause other riders to crash as they try to not run into you, or it may also cause them to actually run into you. Having “spatial” awareness is crucial so that you know who or what is around you at all times.

Riding Speed:

When at the track keep in mind there are other riders around you and a large majority of them are riding at faster speeds. It is very important you are comfortable with riding at a faster speed than a cruising speed otherwise you may be pushed off the track. Practice riding outside of the track, like on a desert trail or any open area. When you first get on the track you may feel slower than others, but that is okay. Get a little feel of the average speed and try to match that. If you’re uncomfortable with the speed, try a different track.

Turning:

Dirt bike tracks differ from other riding settings because of the obstacles or different ways the ground becomes formed. There are ruts in the ground especially when turning, these ruts may be deeper than others and it important to be prepared when you come into one. Keep your eyes forward and make sure to follow where the rut is going. Don’t hit your brakes, you’ll lose momentum. Come into a turn with confidence and exit the turn with confidence!

Bonus tip:
Please make sure to wear the appropriate gear, after all, it is only to keep you as safe as possible. No jeans and tennis shoes— helmet, boots, gloves, knee braces, goggles, chest protectors, riding jersey and pants are what you need!

Confidence & Determination:

Taking your bike to the track is not going to be easy but don’t let a little difficulty stop you. With much practice, the movements will become natural. It can be easy to forget what you learned one week, stay focused on what you want your end results to be. Take the mistakes and learn from them! Don’t be discouraged when you don’t master it on the first few motos. Everyone starts somewhere so don’t give up!

Time for the track!

Now that you are an educated rider you are set and ready to go! No one knows you are a new rider so play it cool and think about what you’ve read. Also, keep in mind there are different tracks you can begin on. You won’t get everything down on your first visit to the track but you’ll have enough to have a great first experience! Keeping these key skills in mind will surely help you get a good start on your first day at the track.
