Riding in the sand dunes can be one of the most exhilarating riding scenes for UTV, buggy, dirt bike, and ATV riders alike. Although the sand seems soft we can confidently say it is not soft when you suddenly crash at high speeds. Before anyone begins to ride the dunes it is important that they have the proper gear so they can be safe and comfortable. Not having the appropriate gear on can cause serious injuries and much more if you are not careful. We strongly recommend for all riders to wear full gear when riding the dunes because they will be most safe in case an accident occurs. Here are some gear items we believe are essential to make your dune-shredding fun, comfortable, and safe.

Helmet:

The most important piece of gear you need to have when riding the dunes is a full face helmet. Please DO NOT ride without a helmet! The sand may seem soft but it can cause some serious injuries when you crash into it at top speed. Having a roll cage on your UTV/buggy is not enough protection either. Your head can easily hit against the roll cage, dash or the ground and cause some serious injuries. A helmet is the best way to keep your head safe when riding because it adds the padding needed in case of an accident. Many riders do not wear a helmet because they say it is too hot. However, there are several dirt helmets that have outstanding ventilation to keep you cool and safe while you ride.

Goggles:

Aside from a helmet, another piece of gear needed at the dunes is a good pair of sand goggles. Trust us when we say that getting sand in your eyes not only sucks, but it is pretty painful as well. Having a pair of goggles specially made for sand is ideal because they use closed-cell foam to prevent any sand from entering the eye area. These goggles will keep the sand away and allow you to see much better when riding.

Bonus Tip: Many Sand Goggles come with a specially tinted lens for dealing with the sun and overcast days. A clear lens is included too!

Riding Shirt:

With the temperatures reaching triple digits you will be tempted to go dune riding in a tank top but it can be extremely dangerous. In case of a crash, you will get some serious injuries from the hot sand scrapping your skin. We recommend wearing a long sleeve riding jersey to help reduce the risk of getting sunburned. Many manufacturers make vented jerseys so they can keep you cooler than the thicker jerseys, but still give you the protection you need. A SXS/UTV you could be ok wearing a short sleeve shirt but do not forget the sunscreen!

Riding Pants:

Although the weather is hot, you do not want to be riding the dunes in shorts. As with the tank top, wearing shorts is asking for trouble if you get into an accident. We recommend wearing pants that are breathable yet provide you with the protection you need to ride the dunes. Again in a SXS/UTV shorts are fine as you are inside the vehicle. Using an ATV and or motorcycle pants are a must!

MX Boots:

Having proper footwear at the dunes is very important. If your unit gets stuck, you will need to walk through the sand to try to get it unstuck and flip flops will not be ideal. We recommend you wear a sturdy boot that goes up over your ankle for the most safety. This will provide good ankle protection and great traction from the sole. Even in an SXS/UTV flip flops are not recommended simply because you are constantly going from your brake to gas pedal and the last thing you want is for your foot/flip flop to slip. Shoes are always a good choice for driving an SXS/UTV.

Conclusion:
Although the sand at the dunes may seem soft, it can cause some serious damage to your body if you crash into it as high speeds. Whether you are riding an ATV, dirt bike, buggy, or UTV at the sand dunes, it is important that you are wearing the appropriate gear so you can be safe and comfortable when riding. Having the proper gear will keep you safe and allow you to enjoy your Sand Dune experience to the fullest.
