What To Know Before You Go To The Dunes
Berts Mega Mall | Powersports Hub
If you are gearing up to hit the dunes for the very first time, buckle up tight because you are in for a different ride than anything else you have experienced! The Sand Dunes are a whole different ball game when it comes to riding so it's important that you are prepared so that you get the most enjoyment out of the sand dunes. We have come up with things we believe you should keep in mind and be prepared for during your first trip to the dunes.
Rapid Weather Changes:
The weather changes rapidly at the dunes so it is very important to be prepared for any weather changes that can suddenly occur. If you visit the dunes during the warmer months expect to have high temperatures all throughout the day. Keep in mind that although the air temperature is reasonable the sand can reach 150-degree temperatures and afternoon thunderstorms can occur. Temperatures can go as low as 10 degrees during winter time and you can experience high winds in the spring. It is usually always cold at night no matter what season it is so be prepared for cooler temperatures at night. A good plan is to ride the dunes early in the morning when the weather is still cool and there are fewer people riding.
Bonus Tip: If you see a thunderstorm approaching get off the dunes immediately. Lightning strikes can be fatal.
Wear the Right Clothing:
Since you have never been to the sand dunes before it can be a little difficult to know what gear and clothes to pack. It is important that you wear the right clothing so that you are safe and comfortable during your trip. Make sure you wear dune-appropriate attire since the riding environment varies greatly from rock, dirt and trail riding. For sun and sand protection make sure you pack a well-fitting helmet, goggles, gloves, long sleeve shirt, pants, and a lightweight facemask and neck cover to prevent sand from hitting your face. Make sure to always pack a warm jacket year round because temperatures always drop at night.
Bonus Tip: Pack earplugs to keep sand out of your ears when it gets windy
Bonus Tip 2: Pack eye drops in case you get sand in your eyes
You “Might” Get Sick:
If roller coasters are not your friend then there is a chance you might get sick at the sand dunes is not something you want to know before going out on your first sand dunes trip. Motion sickness is something that many duners experience during their first visit to the dunes because they are not accustomed to the motion of the vehicle. If you experience shortness of breath, headaches, and nausea at the dunes, make sure to drink plenty of water and take it slow. It is recommended to take a motion sickness pill 30-60 minutes before riding to prevent the motion sickness from occurring.
Bonus Tip: Use earplugs to keep you from getting sick as motion sickness is caused by your ears getting too much air pressure.
Bring Face Wipes:
If you have never been to the dunes, just know that you will have sand everywhere! If you decide to go on a windy day, wind-blown sand can be painful and dangerous. You can wear a face mask to prevent sand from hitting your face but you will still get some sand in your face. Having face wipes are essential to wipe the sand off your face and goggles so that you can see a lot better when riding.
You Will Have a Blast:
Once you have your first experience the sand dunes you are going to want to go again because it is a BLAST! The dunes are a great vacation spot for the entire family with many activities to choose from, especially if you can hit some coastal dunes where the ocean is right there! Whether you go to the sand dunes for camping, riding the dunes, or both, you will have an awesome time!
Conclusion:
The sand dunes are a whole different level when it comes to camping and riding because they can be very unpredictable and change fairly quickly. In order to be fully prepared and enjoy your experience at the dunes, make sure you have the necessary items available. Having gear for all types of weather, motion sickness medication to prevent you from getting sick, and wipes to remove sand from your face after a long day at the dunes are essential to enjoying the dunes. Having all the necessary items will allow you to have an amazing experience at the sand dunes that you will want to go back again!!
